The Insect Societies Illustrations
Sarah Landry began her illustration career at Harvard University illustrating ferns for Dr’s Alice and Rolla Tryon. This work led to her first published illustrations of insects for Dr. Howard Evans. When these illustrations came to the attention of Dr. E. O.Wilson, he asked Sarah to illustrate The Insect Societies, and later Sociobiology. Dr. Wilson commented on this in his biography, Naturalist: “Sarah Landry, then as now one of America’s best wildlife illustrators, was miraculously available in the early part of her career as I was starting work on my big books.” Each of Sarah’s early assignments—from illustrating plants, to insects, to animals—offered new challenges in her development as a natural science illustrator.
